Night 1 New Zealand Darts Masters Hamilton 2022 Match 1 Jonny Clayton v Mal Cuming Clayton threw competitively for the first time since he won the World Series title at Wollongong as he opened the match with an 85. He followed up with visits of 140 and two 100s to leave 76. Cuming had started more slowly so when Clayton missed tops for the leg he was far enough ahead to come back, twice, to the oche and finally a double 4 had him hold throw. Clayton then started with a 140 against the Cuming throw but a maximum for the first time in the match, at his third visit, and a follow up ton, left him needing 96. Clayton had a shot at 156 but missed as Cuming left tops for the leg. Cuming and Clayton then both missed opportunities at the leg before the Aussie secured the darts for a tied scoreline at one apiece. Clayton then secured his first maximum on-throw to leave him requiring 162. Clayton left 57 but again missed multiple darts at the leg. Eventually Clayton threw double 5 for the leg (he had missed ten to this point) and a 2-1 lead. Clayton was unable to pounce on a poor start from Cuming in the next leg. Cuming moved to a 126 check out chance as a 140 left Clayton needing 44. The Bull missed the bull for the leg and this time Clayton pounced with a double 16, giving him the break and a 2-1 lead. Clayton then opened with a ton although a 140 later in the leg kept Cuming in it. Clayton had a shot at 150 with Cuming on 134 standing behind him. He left 52 as Cuming could not get a dart at a check out on his next visit. Double 16 was again the friend of Clayton to give him a 4-1 lead. Cuming opened with a ton only for Clayton to respond with his second maximum of the match. Cuming threw another ton which was matched by his Welsh opponent. A 140 from Clayton left him needing 8 but Cuming put pressure on it by setting up 61 with a maximum but darts 10 and 11 checked out 81 for a 5-1 lead and to throw for the match. A 134 from his second visit in the seventh leg put Clayton in front although a 140 swung the leg the other way. Clayton left a check out of 152 as Cuming left 118. Clayton could not check out the big score but neither could Cuming and Clayton threw 20 double 16 at his next visit to secure the match 6-1. Jonny Clayton 6 (88.14) Mal Cuming 1 (78.55)
Match 2 Joe Cullen v Damon Heta Joe Cullen opened the next match with a 180 which Heta responded to by throwing 134. Cullen had thrown two 140s to set himself up for the leg and when Heta missed bull for it Cullen pounced with a double 20 last dart in hand. Cullen then opened with a ton but Heta responded with a 139. A follow up 97 and 100 from Cullen and Heta respectively left Heta in a good position but with Heta needing 108 Cullen left 52. Heta missed a dart at double 16 for the leg but Cullen presented him with another visit by missing two leg darts and Heta broke straight back with a double 16 with his 16th dart. 3-1 to Cullen. Heta then opened with 96 on throw as Cullen started with a 140. Cullen followed up with a 97 and Heta failed to throw a treble on visits around that score. 139 left Heta needing 146 later in the leg. He could only throw 94 as Cullen threw for Shanghai and collected it to lead 3-1. Leg five saw Cullen start poorly but hit a maximum on his second visit. Heta threw two consecutive 133s to leave 77 but left 20 on his first attempt at it. Cullen had thrown 118 before that to leave 56 and, presented the chance, Cullen took it to lead 4-1. Heta started with visits of 100, 135 and 99 to leave 167 in leg six. He was put under pressure by Cullen as 171 left him standing behind Heta on 132. Wade hit the bull to leave 154 as Mathers could only leave 165. Wade left 39 and despite Mathers putting the pressure on with a 93 leaving him on 69, Wade won the leg with his 17th dart. 4-2 to Mathers. Whitlock secured a 4-3 lead with his 15th dart of the seventh leg. Van den Bergh then held throw despite taking three visits to collect the final 140 he needed. During that time Whitlock had thrown 135 and 137 to leave 70 but the double four from Van den Bergh’s 16th dart denied the Wizard a shot at it. 4-4. The next leg saw nine consecutive perfect darts before Whitlock stepped up to attempt a nine darter. He only got 76 of the 141 target and thus left himself 65 as Van den Bergh threw 141 to leave 80. He then threw for the match but Whitlock opened the stronger with another 180. Van den Bergh responded in kind and then threw 140. A 135 from Whitlock left him on 128 but a treble 19, sixteen and bullseye gave his opponent the match, Van den Bergh winning 6-4. Dimitri Van den Bergh 6 (100.37) Simon Whitlock 4 (96.48)

Van den Bergh made his own error with a double 17 but a 3 and double 6 straight after gave him the leg and a 2-1 lead. On throw Van den Bergh threw 139 at his second visit and backed it up with a 140. Cullen then threw the same and made better of the set up to leave 70. With Van den Bergh unable to check out 140 Cullen missed double 16 for the leg and an immediate break back. With his last dart in hand Van den Bergh checked out 80 to lead 3-1. Van den Bergh then missed match darts before Cullen finally pounced with his 18th dart. Cullen then had the throw and opened with 100 and then 93. A 121 from Van den Bergh kept him in the leg but Cullen had first shot at it, throwing 100 to leave 116. In the clash between the two losing finalists from the Australian legs of this year's World Series of Darts Price ten threw two 140s and a 93 to leave 128. A bounce out with his last dart then prevented Wade from getting to a check out. Price missed double four for a 128 check out and then a 128 visit moved Wade to 56. Price checked out with his 14th dart and led 2-0. Against the throw Price threw 100 and 140 to take a good lead in the leg and left 164 after nine darts. Price did not take the big check out but left 70 and with Wade not on a check out he returned to the oche. He missed tops for the leg but Wade was unable to take the leg on his next visit. A last dart in hand double 5 gave Price a 3-0 lead, including two break of throws. It took five visits in the next leg to have a triple figure visit, a 140 from Price, before Wade threw 117. Price missed a dart at a 4-0 lead and, as so often in his career, Wade checked out with a double 10. Price 3-1. Price opened with a 140 and 131 in the next leg, Wade throwing 99 and 137 in response. A 140 left Price on 90 as Wade moved from 170 to 70. Price threw two 20s but went low on the bullseye to leave 25. Wade then missed the double 20 for the leg but Price missed two leg darts of his own. Double ten was Wade’s saviour once more. 3-2. Price then opened leg six with a 180 and after three visits had set himself a 164 target. Wade threw two 140s as Price missed leg darts before a double 10 gave Price a two leg lead once more, 4-2. Wade opened against the Price throw with a 174 and 140 but in between Price threw a maximum. A ton left Wade on 87 but it would be under pressure as a 134 left Price requiring 59. With Wade unable to take the leg on his next visit Price took the match with his 14th dart, 6-2. Gerwyn Price 6 (94.19) James Wade 2 (93.8) Quarter Final 3 Michael van Gerwen v Jonny Clayton Jonny Clayton opened his quarter final with Michael van Gerwen with two 180s. Van Gerwyn threw a 140 in between. Clayton left 46 and in 11 darts Clayton had held throw. Van Gerwyn threw his first maximum on his second visit to the oche as the two winners of the World Series of Darts in Australia this year went head to head. Van Gerwyn missed two darts at double 16 for the leg but Clayton could not take the 156 out, only for the Dutchman to bust his score on his next visit to the oche. Clayton then secured a 96 check out for a 2-0 lead. A 140 from MvG took advantage of a poor start from Clayton in leg three and the same two visits later set him up well. Van Gerwen then threw 97 to leave tops and with Clayton not on a finish was able to come back and get double twenty with his 13th dart. 2-1. On throw MvG threw 140 and 100 with his second and third visits. Clayton responded with 100 and 135. MvG could not put 104 away but Clayton could not get a second 96 check out.
